From Distance to Belonging: Immigration, Nationalism and Democracy

On May 14, 2019, Andrea Cristina Mercado shared her experiences from 20 years of organizing alongside women in immigrant and low-income communities, and moving hearts and minds to reimagine what is possible. Mercado is executive director of Florida Rising and the New Florida Majority Education Fund. She discussed the importance and power of having a sense of belonging; support groups for immigrant survivors of violence; and orchestrating a 100-woman, 100-mile pilgrimage for immigration reform. Mercado also shared lessons on how cultivating an engaged democracy can build bridges and construct communities of belonging, even on the most polarizing topics of our time.
