Overview

The most-ever watched Frontline film, Sick Around the World, explores how other industrialized countries deliver health care and what the United States can learn from their experiences. Reported by T.R. Reid, a longtime foreign correspondent and former Rocky Mountain bureau chief for The Washington Post, this hour-long film looks at health care systems in five countries: Taiwan, Japan, Germany, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. The Colorado Trust provided underwriting support for this film.

T.R. Reid, Rocky Mountain PBS and The Colorado Trust also worked together to relate the lessons learned through Sick Around the World to the specific health care challenges and opportunities in Colorado. These short segments (two to three minutes each) aired regularly on Rocky Mountain PBS; watch them online at the links below:

The follow-up Frontline film, Sick Around America, focused on the 225 million Americans under 65, not covered by Medicaid or Medicare, who seek access to health care via the private insurance market. The film investigated how this system works, from large employer-sponsored insurance to the small group market to the individual market. Frontline explored how best to reform a system where many Americans find themselves uninsured, underinsured or uninsurable, where costs are rising four times faster than wages and where different stakeholders hold very different perspectives.
