Safe School Ambassadors Honored

Nearly 500 K-12 students from 14 schools in the Roaring Fork Valley were honored for their efforts to stamp out bullying in their schools and communities. The special luncheon was held at the Hotel Colorado in Glenwood Springs and was hosted by the Children's Health Foundation. The Foundation is one of 45 grantees under The Colorado Trust's $8.6 million, three-year Bullying Prevention initiative.

The elementary, middle and senior high students are all "student ambassadors." Through the Safe School Ambassadors Program, these students receive special training to learn how to spot cruel teasing, taunting and other forms of bullying - much of which may go unnoticed by adults. They also learn how to safely and effectively intervene and put a stop to bullying activities.

As Trust program officer for the Bullying Prevention Initiative, Ed Lucero was on hand for the event to honor the young people's efforts. "It was a really powerful day, filled with energy, commitment and enthusiasm," Ed said. "These young people are doing what's needed to make things better for everyone. Not only are they putting a stop to a lot of cruel behaviors based on differences, the ambassadors are helping both their peers and adults to better see the strength of differences."
