03/24/10 – A New Outlook for Achieving Access to Health for All Coloradans

by Irene M. Ibarra

President & CEO, The Colorado Trust

In 2008, when The Colorado Trust announced a decade-long commitment to focus our support solely on achieving the vision of access to health for all Coloradans, no one could have imagined the possibility of federal health care reform. The realization of this reform is a historic moment that offers the very real possibility of health coverage to hundreds of thousands of uninsured Coloradans, and millions of Americans.

Yet even as the ink from President Obama's many pens was drying on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, challenges were being launched and a steady stream of questions began to surface as to what exactly this will mean for children, youth, families, seniors, businesses and state economies. No doubt it will take some time to fully understand and implement the many aspects of this legislation.

Our task remains the same: to provide steadfast support in seeing affordable, quality health coverage and care made available to all Coloradans. This means providing clear, balanced information as to what the federal legislation will mean to Coloradans, supporting implementation efforts, and continued Trust support for the many innovative efforts underway in our state to improve our health care system, including reducing costs and producing better health outcomes.

We also will seek to identify those who will remain without benefit of health coverage and access to care even with federal reform, and continue our work to offer all Coloradans the opportunity to enjoy good health.
